The original in the Louvre, standing at 2.75 metres/ 9 feet tall - including her wings - is made of marble from the Cycladic island of Paros. She was found on the island of Samothrace in the north Aegean Sea, and dates to ca 220-185 BC.
Winged Nike was the ancient Greek goddess of victory, success and achievement. The sports company takes its name from her: its logo is derived from the shape of her wing.
Nike was also closely associated with Athena, the goddess of intelligence, wisdom, and strategic thought. The little temple of Athena Nike stands on the southwestern tip of the Akropolis in Athens, and on coins of Alexander the Great, Athena and Nike are frequently featured together.
