Minoan Crete

replica ancient Greek Minoan fresco tile of the Prince of Lilies with sterling silver Minoan jewellery

The Minoans flourished on Crete and Thera (Santorini) 5000 years ago. Our collection of reproduction artefacts and jewellery, all made in Greece, reflects this colourful, vibrant, artistic and sophisticated civilisation.

'Mycenaean' is the term applied to the art and culture of Greece from ca 1600-1100 BC. The name derives from the site of Mycenae in the Peloponnese, the site of a vast fortified palace. Mycenae was the kingdom of King Agamemnon, who led the Greeks to the Trojan War.

In modern archaeology, the site first gained renown through Heinrich Schliemann's excavations in the mid 1870s, which brought to light objects of great opulence, justifying Homer's epithet of Mycenae as 'rich in gold'. The amazing material wealth deposited in the Shaft Graves at Mycenae (c. 1550 BC) points to a powerful elite society that flourished in the subsequent four centuries.

The Myceneans were traders, warriors and engineers. The magnificent entrance to the citadel at Mycenae was the famous 'Lion Gate'. The citadel was fortified with giant walls, constructed from massive stones, called 'Cyclopean' because of their size.
