The top of this lamp is decorated with an octopus within a double headed serpent surround. A serpent also forms the handle.

replica ancient Greek bronze useable oil lamp with octopus and serpent design available from It's All Greek London and online.

The symbolism of the octopus relates to the psyche, to emotion and to intuition. The Minoans depicted this flexible and intelligent creature in the pottery and jewellery, and were clearly intrigued by this silent, graceful, sinuous creature. As a symbol of healing and protection, the serpent was associated with the cult of Asklepios, god of medicine. The Greeks feared it for its tremendous powers, but it was also revered as a defender and guardian. More about the significance of the serpent in INSIGHTS on our archived Wordpress site.

It is cast for us, in Greece, using the traditional 'lost wax' method. As nothing is mass-produced, there will inevitably be slight variations in patination and colouring. Each piece is, therefore, unique.

These oil lamps are made for decorative purposes, as the casting process for our bronzes invariably results in the odd hole! However many customers over the years have used them to great effect, so please do check before using.
