This intricate bracelet, made of fine strands of silver hand-woven together, is joined at the centre with a love-knot motif, decorated with a lotus flower and hinged between foliate finials.
A symbol of love and commitment, the love knot, also known as the Hercules knot, was used in Ancient Greece and Rome in wedding ceremonies and to symbolise Hercules in his capacity as the god of fertility. Consisting of two strong, intertwined strands, it was tied as a protective amulet into the bride’s wedding gown, to be untied by the groom. Hence derives our expression “to tie the knot”. This tradition may have originated from the legendary capture of Diana's girdle by Hippolyta, the Amazon queen.
The lotus flower was also a symbol of purity, as well as beauty. The Ancient Egyptians associated it with rebirth, due to the flower's ability to bloom in sunlight and retract at night.
A necklace, ring and a pair of earrings have been made to go with this bracelet.
Handmade for us in Greece, this jewellery collection is inspired by ancient Greek coins, the art and jewellery of the Minoan civilisation, familiar symbolic motifs and images, and the animals that played a significant part in ancient Greek culture.
Each piece is made of sterling silver, hallmarked '925'.
We can make bracelets in larger or smaller than 'standard' sizes. These special orders can take approximately two to three weeks.
