Symbol of honour, energy and success, the horse, (Greek: 'hippos') was a very important part of everyday life in ancient Greece, and was integral to a thriving economy and an essential part of victorious warfare. Images of the horse abound on pottery and in sculpture.
The horse was associated with Poseidon, the elemental god of the sea, and it denotes power, victory, honour and virility. The Romans believed the horse to be a symbol of the continuity of life.
