the ibex

replica ancient Greek bronze ibex sculptures and pottery from It's All Greek London and online at itsallgreek.co.uk

The elegant ibex was a symbol of energy, vitality, long life, stamina and fertility. Because of its hardy nature and its ability to adapt to mountainous habitats, it was imported to Crete by the Minoans over three millennia ago and is frequently represented in Minoan sculpture, frescoes and pottery.

Zeus was nurtured on Crete by a female ibex, Amaltheia. In gratitude, he granted her immortality in the form of the constellation we know as Capricorn.
