In ancient Greek mythology, sphinx was a symbol of mystery, and the guardian of sacred places. This mythical hybrid creature had the face of a woman, the chest, paws and tail of a lion. and the wings of a bird of prey.
The enigmatic sphinx was particularly associated with Oedipus, to whom she posed the riddle: 'What creature walks on four legs in the morning, on two at midday and on three in the evening?' When Oedipus supplied the correct answer (Man), she hurled herself off a cliff in despair.
We have a range of bronze figurines and the sphinx also features on a number of our hand painted pottery items.
