Dionysos, son of Zeus and Semele, was the god of wine, liquid life, fertility and rebirth in nature. Greek drama evolved from his complex cult. The vine, with its abundant leaves and clusters of grapes, wreaths his brow.
It is based on an original bronze handle attachment in the form of a mask, dating to the 1st century BC-1st century AD (Late Hellenistic or Early Imperial) and currently in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Click on the image below to go to the Metropolitan Museum website.
This mask is cast for us, in Greece, using the traditional 'lost wax' method. As nothing is mass-produced, there will inevitably be slight variations in patination and colouring. Each piece is, therefore, unique. It is supplied ready to hang.
