A gentler version of Medusa with her snakes for hair. This depiction is reminiscent of the Versace icon.
The mythical gorgon Medusa turned to stone anyone who looked at her. With Athena's help, the hero Perseus decapitated her. Thereafter, Athena placed the head of Medusa in the centre of her cloak, the aegis, as an apotropaeic symbol.
