The mischievous god of woodlands and wildlife, he was the hybrid half-man half-goat with horns, giving us our word 'panic', as he had a habit of leaping out to scare unsuspecting nymphs.
His favourite haunt was Arcadia in the central Peloponnese and Ovid in his Metamorphoses tells the story of how 'Pan Pipes' were invented.
