Together with his teacher Sokrates and his pupil Aristotle, Plato formed an essential part of the great trio of ancient Greek philosophers. Together they are said to have laid the philosophical foundations of Western culture.
Plato was also a mathematician, a writer of philosophical dialogues, and the founder of the Academy in Athens, the first institution of 'Higher Education' in the western world.
The original larger sculpture, in bronze, of which this is a much reduced reproduction, is in the museum in Naples.
