A remarkable piece, not least because of her diaphanous veil and enigmatic, pensive expression.
Also known as The Veiled Lady, she is a reproduction of an original by the Italian Raphaele Monti, who came to live and work in England 1850. He established his name with this statue, which was purchased by the Duke of Devonshire, and she is now on permanent display along with some of the world’s finest Grand Tour sculpture, in the Chatsworth House marble sculpture collection in Derbyshire.
