Finely incised lines define the subtle details of the legs and the folded arms. Figurines such as this are thought to have had ritual significance with connotations of fertility.
The original figurine, dating to ca 3200-2000BC is currently on display as part of the Goulandris Collection in the Museum of Cycladic Art in Athens. Cycladic figurines from the islands of the Cyclades were originally carved from marble or limestone and are among the earliest representations of the human form in Western art.
This piece is carved in Greece for us, in Greek marble. The finish of this piece feels like fine grain sand paper and has cream undertones beneath the light oatmeal surface of the marble.
