The worship of the bull was widespread in the ancient world as the creature symbolised power, strength and virility. It played a particularly prominent role in ancient Cretan culture, where images of it appear on many of the frescoes and pottery.
Surviving Minoan frescoes and ceramics depict bull-leaping rituals, in which participants of both sexes vaulted over bulls by grasping their horns. Please see our 'Minoan fresco tiles' for examples of these. The 'sacred' bull survives today in the constellation Taurus.
He is cast for us, in Greece, using the traditional 'lost wax' method. As nothing is mass-produced, there will inevitably be slight variations in patination and colouring.
