When Heinrich Schliemann found the original piece during his excavations at Mycenae, he is said to have exclaimed: 'I have gazed upon the face of Agamemnon'. Since then, it has been known as 'Agamemnon's death mask'. The original, in solid gold, is in the National Archaeological Museum in Athens.

The gold-plate is made using the maximum 'microns' possible, relative to the size of the item.
