The shape of this shield is inspired by a Theban coin and is decorated with the figure of a satyr, hybrid worshipper of Dionysos, god of wine and theatre, within a band of vine leaves. He holds a kantharos, his signature two-handled drinking vessel.
Based on the ancient Greek circular shield, the aspis or hoplon, would originally have been made from wood, covered in leather. Measuring approximately 1m in diameter it would not only have protected the bearer, but formed part of the phalanx, the formidable military formation.
It has been cast for us, in Greece, using the traditional 'lost wax' method. As our bronzes are not mass-produced, there will inevitably be slight variations in patination and colouring. Each piece is, therefore, unique. The shield is removable from its marble base and stand.
