The mythical sphinx sits at the front of this crest. In Greek mythology, the sphinx represented mystery and enigma; in Egyptian mythology, it was guardian of sacred places.
A spiral sits above each 'ear' and a scroll motif travels across the brow. Acanthus leaves adorn the nape of the neck.
The prototype for this lifesize helmet is the plain, uncrested Corinthian style of the 6th century BC. Originals of these can be seen in museums across the world, but the model used by our bronze supplier in Greece is in the Goulandris Collection in the Museum of Cycladic Art.
The crests would not originally have been made in bronze, but probably horse-hair. The crests on our helmets, inspired by other media, often portray geometric patterns, magnificent animals or awe-inspiring mythical beasts such as the serpent, griffin or, as here, the sphinx.
As with all our other bronze items, this helmet is cast for us, in Greece, using the traditional 'lost wax' method. It is cast in two parts, then the separately cast crest is inserted. You can still see the wax marks on the inside. As they are not mass-produced, there will inevitably be slight variations in patination and colouring. Each piece is, therefore, unique, examples of both can be seen in these images. By all means call to discuss this. Also, please allow for variations of a millimetre or two from the specified height.
The helmet is mounted on a marble base.
