In 480BC, the Spartan king Leonidas held the pass of Thermopylae for two days against the invading Persian army under Xerxes. With 300 men, he covered the retreat of the Greek fleet then died. Simonides' epitaph to the fallen Greeks reads: 'Go now, and tell the Spartans, passer-by, that here, obedient to their laws, we lie.' A vast statue of him stands in Sparta today.

This bust is cast for us, in Greece, using the traditional 'lost wax' method. As nothing is mass-produced, there will inevitably be slight variations in patination and colouring. Each piece is, therefore, unique. He is mounted on a marble base.
