Dionysos, the son of Zeus and the mortal Semele, was the god of wine, liquid life, fertility and rebirth in nature. Greek drama evolved from his complex cult.
The top of this oil lamp is decorated with the image of a dramatic mask of the god Dionysos, within a garland of vine leaves. His open mouth forms the top opening. There is a similar represention on this bronze mask in our collection:
It is cast for us, in Greece, using the traditional 'lost wax' method. As nothing is mass-produced, there will inevitably be slight variations in patination and colouring. Each piece is, therefore, unique.
These oil lamps are made for decorative purposes, as the casting process for our bronzes invariably results in the odd hole. However many customers over the years have used them to great effect, so please do check before using.
