Symbol of royalty, dignity, courage and strength, lions featured prominently in ancient Greek art and literature.
In Homer's 'Iliad', heroes such as Achilles are compared with them at moments of unrestrained power and savagery. In his first labour, Herakles killed the Nemean Lion and, thereafter, wore its impenetrable hide, making him invulnerable to any weapon. It is this story which lies behind the constellation 'Leo': in honour of Herakles' triumph over the lion, Zeus (father of Herakles) set the lion in the night sky.
This twisted torque is embellished with ropework decoration and terminates each end with a lion's head finial.
