Symbol of healing, guardian and protector of sacred places and objects.
The ancient Greeks revered snakes for their wisdom and healing powers (as in the cult of Asklepios, the god of medicine), but also feared them for their tremendous powers.
The snake appears as a protector in many ancient Greek myths; in fact the name 'Medusa', the snake-haired Gorgon translates from the Greek as 'guardian' or 'protectress'. The Romans regarded the snake as the continuing spirit (or 'genius') of the family unit.
