This Geometric kantharos features riders astride chariots on both sides, and it is carefully decorated with recurring patterns. The Geometric style of vase painting flourished in Greece from 900 B.C. to 700 B.C., predating the more well-known classical red and black figure styles. It was during this key period that ancient artists began to develop the rendering of the human figure which had rarely been seen on pottery before this point.
Military motifs are common among geometric pottery. This particular kantharos, with armed warriors ready for battle, would have been a popular scene at the time. The hatched handles, meander patterned rim, and decorative lines are typical of the Geometric style.
