This Geometric kantharos features riders on horseback on either side and is decorated with recurring patterns. The Geometric style of vase painting flourished in Greece from 900 B.C. to 700 B.C., predating the more well-known classical red and black figure styles. It was during this period that ancient artists began to develop the rendering of the human figure which had rarely been seen on pottery before this point.
Military motifs are common in Geometric pottery and this kantharos is a perfect example, with its riders on horseback, ready for combat. The striped handles, dotted rim, and decorative lines are typical decorative details of the Geometric style.
This vessel was made and painted for us in Greece.
