The original oinochoe dates to approximately the 7th century BC, and is typically Rhodian in style.

The central freeze depicts five ibex, prancing amongst symbols of flowers and foliage. The ibex in antiquity symbolized energy, vitality, long life and fertility. The ibex has particular significance within Greek mythology as the ibex Amalthea nurtured Zeus in Crete. Zeus granted the ibex immortality in the form of the constellation Capricorn. Above the ibex, two pairs of geese complete the shoulbers of the vessel, as they relax in the foliage.
