An open-mouthed griffin head forms part of the crest of this helmet. The hybrid mythological griffin was a symbol of wealth and prosperity and the guardian of prized possessions. Griffins were also sacred to the god Apollo, whose treasure they guarded.

An olive wreath decorates the brow. The olive was the symbol of Athena, goddess of wisdom and intelligence and the patron goddess of Athens, to whom she gave the olive as her gift to the city. It represents achievement and success.

The prototype for this helmet is the plain, uncrested Corinthian style of the 6th century BC in the Goulandris Collection in the Museum of Cycladic Art, in Athens.

The crests would not originally have been made in bronze, but probably horse-hair. The crest on these helmets, inspired by other media, often portray geometric patterns, magnificent animals, or mythical creatures.
