Athena, daughter of Zeus, was the goddess of intelligence, wisdom, resourcefulness and strategic thought. She was also the protectress of women and female crafts. She was born, fully-armed, from the head of her father Zeus and is usually depicted in full armour: helmet, shield, spear and snake-fringed aegis.

Athena was the patron goddess of Athens, to which she gave her name and the gift of the olive. She favoured the heroes Herakles, Jason, Achilles, Perseus and Odysseus, and was associated with Nike, goddess of achievement and victory.

Her symbol was the owl, which you can see here on either side of her forehead.
